Creating a Timeless Lakeside Retreat: A 2024 NALP Gold Award-Winning Project

In 2024, Landmark Landscapes was honored with the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) Gold Award of Excellence for a remarkable lakeside project on Elkhart Lake. This project transformed a 7-acre property into a stunning, resort-like retreat that captures the essence of lake living, family connection, and ecological responsibility. By intricately weaving natural elements and precise design, our team created a serene haven for family gatherings and cherished moments—a lakeside estate that will remain timeless for generations.

Client Vision: A Lakeside Sanctuary for Family and Friends

The client sought a place where family and friends could escape the rush of everyday life and relax in a luxurious, yet natural, lakeside environment. The design was to create seamless connections between spaces, where an infinity-edge hot tub overlooking the lake, a state-of-the-art outdoor kitchen, and multiple lounging areas coexist effortlessly with the natural surroundings. A focus on preserving the landscape’s natural beauty led us to incorporate native plants, sustainable water management, and a unique design inspired by the Fibonacci spiral—a mathematical pattern that lends beauty and order throughout the property. Therefore, each space was tailored to accommodate gatherings of all sizes, ensuring that every inch of the property reflected the client’s vision for a peaceful family retreat.

Design Challenges: Working with Complex Zoning, Topography, and Infrastructure

The project’s complexities presented several design and logistical challenges, each of which required innovative problem-solving:

  • Zoning Incongruities: The 7-acre property was subject to conflicting zoning codes that initially prohibited a second residence and additional structures. By working closely with local authorities, we successfully petitioned for a zoning adjustment, allowing for a guest house and extended outdoor living spaces that the client desired for large gatherings.
  • Site Grading and Water Management: The original grading funneled water directly toward the lake, threatening both the lake’s ecosystem and the home’s foundation. We reshaped the landscape, channeling runoff into a natural wetland area that filters water before it reaches the lake, protecting the aquatic environment while enhancing the property’s natural appeal.
  • Shared Access Road: A historical public road ran directly through the estate, which compromised the sense of privacy and continuity in design. By redesigning and rerouting the road, we not only increased privacy but also added aesthetic value to the entrance, creating a scenic, winding approach that gradually reveals the beauty of the property.
  • Neighbor Proximity: Given the proximity of neighboring homes, maintaining privacy was crucial. We used strategic plantings and landscape features to create visual barriers. Achieving a sense of seclusion while respecting the nearby properties.
  • Woodland Restoration: The property’s woodlands had suffered due to emerald ash borer infestation and invasive buckthorn. We revitalized the ecosystem by removing diseased trees. Then introducing native species, and opening up views. Turning this previously unusable area into a peaceful natural space for the family to enjoy.

Achieving the Vision: Solutions and Strategic Execution

With challenges carefully addressed, our focus turned to bringing the client’s vision to life

The Fibonacci spiral inspired the layout, centering on a driveway that transitions into freestanding stone walls, natural hedges, and pathways that guide visitors toward the lakeshore. This design structure not only creates visual harmony but also subtly directs movement across the property. Which invites guests to explore its many “rooms,” from cozy fire pit areas to expansive lounging decks.

Local Stone was integral to the project, lending authenticity and permanence. The stones were quarried nearby. Used in pathways, retaining walls, and other elements that blend with the landscape’s natural texture, enhancing the property’s timeless feel.

The gardens were carefully designed with native plants that bloom during summer. Reflecting the client’s seasonal use of the property. The array of flowers and shrubs was selected to create a vibrant display during the family’s summer stay, adding color and beauty to every outdoor space.

Overcoming Execution Challenges: Precision and Collaboration

Executing this design posed unique logistical challenges. The Fibonacci spiral’s scale demanded absolute precision, so we enlisted a surveyor to ensure exact measurements at every stage, maintaining the integrity of the design. Coordination with multiple contractors was crucial, as was implementing strict safety protocols, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, our team’s dedication to collaboration and attention to detail led us to complete the project on time for the 2021 summer season.

The Legacy of Lake Living

This lakeside estate goes beyond a landscape project; it embodies the client’s dream of a family legacy. By blending natural beauty with meticulous design, we created an environment that offers joy, tranquility, and connection to nature. The Fibonacci-inspired layout, sustainable practices, and careful craftsmanship ensure this retreat remains a sanctuary for generations to come.
