Landmark Foreman Competes in National Collegiate Landscape Competition

Landmark Landscapes seeks to hire the best, brightest, and most talented students coming from the collegiate ranks. Grace Pribbernow, Gardening Foreman, who has been with Landmark since July 2020 is no exception. In May of this year, Grace graduated from Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) with an Associate degree in Horticulture with an emphasis in Arboriculture. In March of 2023, just prior to her graduation Grace competed in the National Collegiate Landscape Competition (NCLC) at Mississippi State University.

National Collegiate Landscape Competition

The NCLC is an annual event that brings together students from colleges and universities across the United States who are studying landscape and horticulture-related disciplines. It is hosted by the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP).

The competition serves as a platform for students to showcase their skills and knowledge in various areas of the landscape industry. Participants engage in a wide range of activities, including hardscape installation, plant identification, irrigation troubleshooting, landscape design, tree climbing, and many more. The competition events are designed to simulate real-world challenges that students may encounter in their future careers.

Grace Enjoys Success at Competition

Grace was one of six students who made the trip to Starkville, MS for the competition from Milwaukee Area Technical College. All told 47 schools participated in the competition and more than 600 students overall. Which makes Grace’s success all the more impressive.

In total Grace competed in five different skills competitions.

  • Arboriculture Techniques: Grace teamed with a partner in which Grace did the climbing portion and her partner managed the throw line. Then placed 6th overall.
  • Skid Steer Competition: This was an individual competition in which participants navigated an obstacle course with a pallet in the forks of their skid steer with a safety cone on the pallet with a tennis ball resting on the cone. The course was flanked by safety cones with tennis balls resting atop them. The objective of this was to complete the course without the tennis ball falling off the cone that was set on the pallet or knocking any of the balls off the cones while navigating the course. Grace placed 8th out of a field of 33. She credits her experience at Landmark with her success.
  • Construction Cost Estimating: Contestants are given a landscape plan and asked to estimate the cost of the project by doing take-off from the plan. Grace finished 6th of 55.
  • Maintenance Cost Estimating: Similar to the Construction Cost Estimating competition the maintenance cost estimating portion judged the competitor’s skill in estimating maintenance projects. Grace finished in the top third of the competition.
  • Woody Plant ID: In this competition Grace did outstanding, finishing 7th out of 62 competitors. Again, crediting her opportunity at Landmark to work with and around so many trees and shrubs on a daily basis.

Landmark Landscapes is very proud of the success of Grace Pribbernow. We look forward to allowing her to use her skill and expertise for many years to come!
