Moraine Oasis – Outdoor Living Destination

Moraine Oasis proves how a single idea—an outdoor kitchen—can inspire the transformation of an entire landscape into a cohesive outdoor living destination.

Project Evolution

This project began with a homeowner requesting an outdoor kitchen. However, early conversations revealed a larger opportunity. The existing patio was undersized and dated. Meanwhile, the pool area, installed seven years earlier, felt disconnected from the home. Therefore, the client sought a more cohesive outdoor living environment. They envisioned multiple entertainment zones and seamless movement between house, patio, and pool. In addition, they requested a timeless aesthetic using coordinated stone and plant palettes. The design also needed to respect the property’s existing curves and character. While the budget remained flexible, the client expected premium materials and thoughtful design decisions.

Site Challenges

However, the existing site presented several challenges. First, the two outdoor areas felt visually and functionally separate. In addition, the patio near the home no longer matched the property’s scale. The project also required grading an open turf area for a future tent location. Downspouts needed integration with the existing drainage system. Furthermore, the sandy soil conditions required careful preparation. Several utilities also needed coordination. These included heating elements, gas service, lighting, and outdoor kitchen components.

Sequence of Outdoor Rooms

In response, the design created a continuous sequence of outdoor rooms. Each area offers distinct amenities while remaining visually unified. Patios were expanded and reshaped to encourage natural movement between spaces. A layered lighting plan enhances nighttime use and creates atmosphere. Materials were chosen for durability and visual continuity. Thermal bluestone in a full color range anchors the hardscape. Weathered-edge Chilton stone veneer complements the architecture. Custom metal and wood details add refinement and character. Meanwhile, plantings balance structured forms with softer textures. Together, they provide seasonal interest and manageable maintenance.

Construction, Craftsmanship & Coordination

Construction required both craftsmanship and careful coordination. Several custom elements became focal points of the design. These include Keystone inlays within Chilton stone surfaces. The outdoor kitchen features an arched backsplash and custom metal arch. Cantilevered beams and custom bluestone brackets support the countertop. A pergola with pendant lighting defines the gathering space. An outdoor chandelier and gas fire feature extend evening use. Sequencing required close coordination among subcontractors and ongoing communication with the client. Construction began after Labor Day and concluded before Memorial Day weekend.

Unified Outdoor Living

The completed landscape now functions as a unified outdoor living environment. Distinct gathering spaces connect naturally while maintaining a consistent material palette. The design enhances everyday relaxation and supports large-scale entertaining. Most notably, the outdoor kitchen has become the centerpiece of the property. In recognition of its design, craftsmanship, and overall execution, the project received a Gold Award of Excellence from the Wisconsin Landscape Contractors Association (WLCA) in March 2026. The WLCA Awards of Excellence program recognizes outstanding landscape projects across Wisconsin. Winning a WLCA award reflects the highest standards of design, construction, and professional collaboration within the industry.
